| Venice Florida - Site of the Month Award Winners
Return to Venice Links Table of
Contents Started in February of 2000, this award is given to outstanding non-profit, non-commercial or personal web sites that represent the Venice and surrounding areas. September, 2001 - Tolerance.org - Our biggest enemy isn't Osama bin Laden or even terrorism. It's the hatred that gave rise to these events. July, 2001 - sejje.net - Teen angst, a hacker's mentality and a bizarre sense of humor are all in this recent VHS grad's site. The "missions" are curious: guerilla photography for no apparent reason. May, June 2001 - Venice Main Street and The Skaggs Family - Venice Main Street has refurbished their site in a grand way. Great historic photo section. The Skaggs win the award if only for the goofy and scary photo on the front page of a boy and his dog. It's not a dog exactly. It's a... aw, you figure it out. April, 2001 - The Pelican Man - Since 1981, Dale Shields has been a staunch advocate and protector of not just pelicans, but of all Florida wildlife. It would be impossible to overstate the contribution his organization has made to our community. March, 2001 - Venice Police Department and Venice Police Explorers - The Venice Police lead the way on the web with the only official city government site and with one of the best law enforcement sites in the state of Florida. January and February, 2001 - Venice Indians Football - unofficial fan site (1st two-time winner) - Venice kicked major ass! Took names too, as well as a state football title and a 7th place national ranking by USA Today. This fan site, put together by Debra Lawrence, archives all the highlights of an amazing season. December, 2000 - Venice Little Theatre - Who says a good web site is hard to maintain? Venice Little Theater manages their own web content in house with a small group of in-house volunteers. November, 2000 - Your Pride and Joy - A group of local students takes on the daunting task of in depth coverage of all local school sports. While the site is not totally fleshed out, we heartily applaud their efforts to date. October, 2000 - Suncoast Humane Society - Just about anything you want to know about adopting a new pet or caring for the one you already have is there. Great site, great organization. September, 2000 - Selby Botanical Gardens - They've done a total revamp of their site recently, and it looks good. The gardens themselves look even better -- after your virtual visit, make plans for a real, in-person visit. August, 2000 - War with Canada - An older site, written by one of our staffers. A mentally unstable look at Canadians and their annual invasion of Florida. July, 2000 - EdFurniture.com - As Ed Furniture, they have fooled several media-types into thinking their D.E.M.I. robot will replace MP3s. As Sir Millard Mulch, they are distributing dangerous music produced by a dangerous young man. This Venice art collective, or local round table, has a small circle of very talented (and very warped) young men. We are taking donations to move them to Naples. June, 2000 - CokeSpotlight.org - This is not a site that originates in Florida, however the impact should be obvious. We are in a drought. Coca-Cola is a sponsor of the "Green Games," the upcoming Olympics in Australia. CokeSpotlight.org accuses the soft drink manufacturer of being one of the world's largest contributors to the global warming problem. May, 2000 - Suncoast Reef Rovers - Site by Bill Willson, photos by Greg Vine (who'd have thunk he was so damned good with an underwater Canon?). April, 2000 - The Venice Foundation - Venice's premier non-profit organization is responsible for making sure other worthwhile charities survive. March, 2000 - Jon Thaxton for County Commissioner - A great example of what to do with a political web site on a modest budget. February, 2000 - Roadwaves - A woman, her VW and her journeys. |
