Purely speculation on my part, but I betcha if anyone takes a hard look at all the city's projects over the past 20 yrs or so, that bathroom isn't the only sweetheart deal to go out to CQG affiliates, and at inflated prices. There are too many "exclusive" deals to even begin to recount, but the Hot dog stand and that "public restroom" that the city paid to run utility lines to and then pays the stand owner to "maintain" the bathroom is just the first that comes to my mind. If I recall the original contract paid something in the area of $800 a month for this "maintenance and cleaning". None other than such an authority on the usual and customary costs of such maintenance than former Mayor Calamaras informed council (at that time) that this was really a good price and a great deal for the city. All this for a lessee who was not even a resident of the city. Just another amazing story from those days when all you residents slept through council meetings and decisions that are still affecting you and the city. Today's HT has an editorial from a resident wondering why the county doesn't own and run it's own public golf course. If Venice had seized the day back in 97/98, the city would be getting the profit from Lake Venice and the VGA wouldn't be have the ability to be making deals with developers like Marriott. Wake up and get some good candidates this Fall or else go back to sleep so you don't feel the pain.
