One thing for sure the South County Republican Club was the big loser in last November’s election. In the first case there is exclusion. The party wanted nothing to do with the moderate Republican Jim Bennett and put all their effort behind his very vocal conservative opponent. Message – Main Stream Republicans Need Not Apply. But what is far worse is that they actively backed a guy who was asked to run by the powerful Fire Union who virtually ran his first campaign. You have a business agent for the union sitting on the City Council. So here is what the local Republicans stand for: 1- It’s OK for Venice to pay three times as much per capita for fire service as the Englewood Fire District. 2-Average VFD compensation of nearly $110,000 is great especially for guys who only work 100 days a year. 3- It’s swell that Firemen can begin to collect pensions worth nearly 90% of their salaries as young as age 43. In other words, South County Republicans feel that municipalities should be run like General Motors on crack --- or have no principles what so ever.
